Working Safely

Working Alone — Your Personal Safety

Practical, sensible steps for independent carers heading into someone's home. Your safety comes first.

As an independent carer, you are responsible for your own safety. We encourage you to:

  • Share your whereabouts

Tell someone you trust where you are going, who you are visiting, and when you expect to be back.

  • Trust your instincts

You can always leave a situation. You never need a reason to walk away from a visit that does not feel right.

  • Keep emergency numbers handy

Save 999, your next of kin, and the platform contact details in your phone before you set off.

  • Agree boundaries clearly

Discuss duties, hours, and what you are not comfortable with upfront with the family, so everyone knows where they stand.

If you feel unsafe, call 999 immediately

Do not wait to check with anyone first. Leaving a visit early is always the right call if you are worried about your safety.

Call 999

These are suggestions — your safety decisions are your own.
